WORCESTER, Mass. – April 30, 2013 – Discover Marble & Granite has partnered with Solect Energy Development of Hopkinton to install a 133.25kW solar PV (photovoltaic) system on the roof of its Worcester office and showroom. The system has been in place since the beginning of February and makes the perfect addition to an already “green” company.

When pursuing solar, Discover Marble has two goals: continue its quest to be a highly sustainable company while also reducing energy costs. “Our company is very green by nature through all of our recycling and the eco-friendly technologies we use, and this seemed like the next logical step for us,” said Discover owner Victor DeOliveira. “I did not know a lot about solar when we first started down this path, and Solect had the expertise to guide us through every step of the project.”

Specializing in residential and commercial interior stonework, Discover offers eco-friendly and sustainable materials as well as utilizes the latest technologies – such as using a natural water resource to cut the stone and then recycling that water via a closed-loop system for use again. All scrap materials are recycled into landscape materials. Instead of using plywood forms to measure, Discover utilized a CAD system for more accuracy and zero waste.

Phase 1 of Discover’s solar project is now complete. Once both stages of the installation are complete, the solar system will be supplying 80 percent of the company’s electricity demand. Solect has managed to significantly cut Discover’s annual electricity bill, with anticipated annual savings of nearly $20,000. With the addition of solar energy, Solect has become a huge part of Discover Marble’s overall green movement. The company was also able to take advantage of significant federal and state incentives to make the project even more affordable.

“Discover is the epitome of a green company and it has been a pleasure to work with them as they adopted renewable solar energy as their next big step,” said Scott Howe, business development partner at Solect. “Not only will they see significant savings and revenue benefits from solar, but they also are helping the environment in a major way.”
