NHL Licensee Installs 175 kW Solar Energy System, Increases Electricity Efficiency
SALISBURY, MA—July 9, 2014--Old Time Sports, a North Shore apparel company, has turned its Salisbury, MA, headquarters “green”, deploying a 175 kW solar photovoltaic (PV) renewable energy solution. Old Time Sports partnered with Solect Energy Development of Hopkinton, MA, to develop and install the system, which is expected to cover 100 percent of the company's annual electricity needs. The solar energy system is expected to generate up to $70,000 a year in environmentally friendly electricity.
The roots for Old Time Sports, which is owned by brothers Bob, Chris and Eric Magnuson, come from their family’s days of playing outdoor “pond” hockey. With that in mind, becoming a more environmentally friendly company blends with the protection of the natural resources that the Magnusons enjoyed as youngsters on the ice, and which led them into careers in hockey.
Over the last few years, the price of installing a renewable energy solution decreased and that, coupled with federal and state incentives, made pursuing solar energy for the company's 35,000-square-foot offices and warehouse economically attractive. State incentives include Solar Renewable Energy Certificates (SRECs), which solar system owners earn based on the amount of solar energy their system generates. SRECs are purchased by electrical utility providers in Massachusetts to help them meet their state-mandated goals of a percentage of power coming from renewable energy sources.
Old Time Sports chose Solect because of the company's focus, knowledge and expertise in working with businesses in Massachusetts to deploy smart solar energy solutions. "It was clear from the start that they knew their business inside and out," co-owner and CEO Bob Magnuson said.
"It was a pleasure working with the team at Old Time Sports," said Alex Keally, partner at Solect Energy Development. "They recognized right away that solar was a great choice for making their business more sustainable, and the economic model made it very attractive to deploy a system to cover 100 percent of their annual electric needs. They are a great role model for companies of all types that want to make a difference in the environment by reducing their carbon footprint."
